Riverdale runs past Irish in season opener

At the opening game, Grace King lost to Riverdale with the score of 42-12. For Riverdale, they had a strong first half with Ruben Mack starting off with a touchdown in the first quarter. Grace King failed to respond without scoring on their drive, punting back to Riverdale. After, Antonio Joseph scored another touchdown for Riverdale changing the score to 14-0.

In the second quarter, Antonio Joseph added to Riverdale’s lead scoring two touchdowns. Now with the score 28-0, Riverdale didn’t ease up which didn’t allow King to score the entire quarter.

In the third quarter, Grace King and Riverdale went back to back with touchdowns. Minutes within the quarter, Riverdale kicked off to Grace King. At the start of the catch, Dralon Bridges took the ball up center field to run an 89-yard kick return. Riverdale not ready to slow down, returned a 78-yard kick return by Antonio Joseph. After that score neither teams scored any other points in the third quarter.

Then finally in the fourth quarter, Dralon Bridges scored another touchdown for Grace King. Bridges ran a 58-yard touchdown, bringing up the score for Grace King 12-42. After that, each team had empty possessions until the time ran out in the 4th, ending the game with King starting their season 0-1.

After the game, a couple members of our newspaper staff interviewed players and the head coach of the Grace King football team. First asking DE, Hugo Garcia, “How do you bounce back from a lost like this?” He responded, “ with all hard work and persistence; we just have to put our minds to it.” This was a common answer with all players having the same mentality.
