The Lady Irish volleyball team played two matches in as many days this week, losing the first, but winning the second.

On Tuesday, Grace King hosted East Jefferson. The JV teams played at 430pm, with the Irish taking both of those games.

The varsity teams followed. In the first of three games, both teams were tied at 22 points, but Grace King lost their momentum and East Jefferson capitalized on Irish mistakes to win 25-22. The frustration of losing that first game was more and more evident in the next two games as East Jefferson cruised to 25-17 and 25-10 wins to take all three games of the day’s match.

After the game, Coach Johnson touched on the missed opportunities. “Our girls need to learn how to finish because we start off and we are enthusiastic, we’re winning, and then I don’t know if they get nervous and we fall flat. So that was our motivational speech at the end…to push through.”

She also added what the girls need to do in those tight moments of the game, especially at the end. “We need them to communicate more and we need them to not forget the fundamentals. You can’t just swing, you have to have your feet ready to move, ready to execute.”

These thoughts seemed to pay off the next day (Wednesday) when Grace King played at Carver at won the match 3-2.

Coach La Du described the match as being “a roller coaster…full of big service runs…in which the Irish managed to gain control at the right time and clinch their first win of the season.”

According to his report of the day, Grace King won the first game, but suffered “a mental lapse” in game two that ended with both teams tied 1-1. Grace King then won the third game, but lost the fourth after “chipping away at” a very large Carver lead. The match was then determined in the fifth, and final, game of the day in which Grace King began with a 7-1 lead.

Next: The Lady Irish will play Carver (2-3) again, this time at home, on Wednesday, September 19. The next day, they will be on the road at West Jefferson (1-5).
