Just like last week, Grace King and Carver traded games back-and-forth. And just like last week, Grace King prevailed in the fifth and final game to win the match.

“It was exciting,” Coach Johnson said after the match. “We knew cause we played then last week that we was probably gonna go to five. I told them they couldn’t get down if we lose a game. We just have to put it behind us and hustle for the next one.”

In Game 1, Carver jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. Grace King was able to pull it back and both teams were eventually tied at 22. But late errors gave Carver the first game, 26-24.

Game 2 started out similarly with Grace King down 7-3. After a GK timeout, and some excellent serves by Pia Banks, Grace King tied the game at 7-7 and took the lead 9-7. With service from Tatiana Alexander, that lead grew to 15-8. The Lady Irish never looked back and cruised to a 25-13 win to even the match.

That momentum continued into the third game, where, for the first time that day, Grace King led at the beginning of the game. At the midway point, both teams were close, and then eventually found themselves tied at 22. Carver stole the last three points to regain the match lead.

Facing elimination, the Lady Irish started off Game 4 in strong fashion forcing Carver to call a timeout. They were able to keep that lead until the end, winning 25-16 and forcing the match into the fifth and final tie-break game.

By this point of the game, both teams were showing signs of fatigue. Carver began the game with a 5-2 lead and Grace King called a timeout to regroup and stop Carver’s momentum. That decision paid off to be a game-changer as Samantha Moran went on a tear while serving. At one point, four of five serves were scored as aces and the Lady Irish lead grew to 11-6. Carver called a timeout to change momentum back to themselves, but this proved unsuccessful as Deja Doublet finished off the game with an ace of her own as Grace King won the game 15-8.

Coach Johnson agrees that the team has improved with each week. “They have! It’s fun to see the growth. And I think these two wins…they’ve put them up to be ready to play.”

Grace King (2-5) will play their first district match on Thursday, September 20 on the road against West Jefferson (3-7).
